Named after a railroad family, Hazard was the original name for this quiet yet friendly community developed in December 1869.  The name was changed from Hazard to Meriden after the locals put in a request to the U.S. Postal Service in 1874.  Municipality was granted in 1882 and at its height this communities population grew to over 400 people.  Although current population has declined to 184 people, this is still a very self-sufficient community.  Residents have raised money to construct a fire station/city hall and a multi-purpose community center.  One event to help raise funds is Meriden's annual Pancake Day in March.
